the field across the home-unhomed is filled with holes dug in by cleats 

the one an ankle was twisted

near the goal a girl broke an arm 

a chain fence outlines algee-infused pond water where a turtle 

sunbathes morning after morning  

deflated soccer balls and frisbees are floating, sinking 

being unremembered 

the driveway holds another map but this time its written in chalk and washing away with a hose 

guests are coming for dinner and the lawn should be mowed

we take care of the things we own 

i’m on my hands and knees weeding a flower bed and chewing ice 

they are playing an invented game on gravel with bare feet and no net

she is winning and i keep score 

the back of a semi holds pecans and no one knows why 

handfuls are stuffed in pockets and eaten between trailer awnings 

coffee is provided by the cupful on Saturday morning 

a cup is the size of a Polly-pocket couch and a collage of 

littlest-pet shops are watching cartoons telling only bible stories 

and now the donut man who never ate donuts 

coffee-filter-eight-thirty snacks are witheld when you lie 

i know you took that change 

the thirty cents

lying gets you nothing yet you do it anyways

maybe you’ll change

Chaotic in the sense that people live here and remain unpredictable. Calm in the sense that your driveway still holds firework scorch marks from 2014. You plunge your fingers into a coffee mug filled with Honey Nut Cheerios and dust the crumbs onto your stained and too-large basketball shorts. If you’re lucky, your sister sits beside you and plays her guitar. She cuts through the silence with a rotten chord and sings “oops” in the middle of every song. If you are even luckier, your brothers dance behind you. They twirl with a gracefulness you’ve envied since the beginning, but also decide the vibe can be sexy and sultry, and dance as if someone is holding a stack of ones. Your youngest brother has a stick and a knife and carves a sword that will be used in battle. Your dad is smoking a cigar, and no one seems to care about the smell. Your mom is crocheting another blanket that will turn out too long and too thin. Dad will use it and call it his favorite.

As you go in for another round of Honey Nut’s, you realize you’ve run out. The dust remains. Do you turn and ask your sister for more? No, because she’s not there. A guitar lies abandoned after you tried to play and missed every beat. Now your brothers don’t have music to dance to. You turn around and apologize, but the entertainment has been missing for years—nothing to envy about an empty, cold rooftop. There is no stick, there is no cigar, and there is no blanket. There’s only the cigarette between your chipped nail polish and the world beneath your feet. The ashes fall, and so do you.
